PANTONE 18-3224 Radiant Orchid
It will never cease to intrigue me how only one colour can represent an entire year. One medly of moods, emotions, memories, inspirations captured in a colour which Pantone has selected. Out of all five million colours identified and detected by the human eye, only one can be chosen. What's the criteria, you ask? Well, Pantone carefully looks at a range of things happening world wide to define and predict the year ahead. Things that influence such a colour include the entertainment industry, films, traveling art collections, hot new artists, popular travel destinations, upcoming sports events, technology and other socio-economic conditions.
Pantone has been predicting the colour of the year for more than a decade, influencing multiple industries including fashion, home and industrial design, cosmetics, product packaging and graphic design. Previous colours include:
- PANTONE 17-5641 Emerald (2013)
- PANTONE 17-1463 Tangerine Tango (2012)

So why Radiant Orchid?
Chosen for its mood in encouraging creativity and originality, increasingly valued in today's society, it is an invitation for innovation. Tones within this colour include fuchsia, purple and pink, inspiring confidence and great joy, love and health. It is captivating and draws you in with it's charm.
Fashion Flourishes
Having rosy undertones, it produces a healthy glow when worn on the skin for both men and women. It was already on the runway during the spring 2014 fashion shows and is starting to appear on the red carpet. Keep a look out for it in spring in fashion as well as accessories.
Beauty Blooms
Enlivening the skin and giving a more healthy and energetic feel this colour blends both cool and warm tones together, flattering to many hair, eye and skin tones! Seductive when combined with red and pairs well with its sister shades of lavender, purple and pink, excellent for a playful lipstick and blush and of course, a splash of nail polish. If you have green or hazel eyes this radiant colour will really contrast and bring out the green tones in your eyes. Having brown eyes also is a plus as the colour will draw out the warm brown/maroon tones in your eyes too.
In Interior Design
An eye-catching paint, or for accent pieces and accessories in homewares, Radiant Orchid complements olive and deeper hunter greens and really lifts off when paired with turquoise, teal and if you're feeling brave, light yellow! A vibrant colour to liven up any neutrals (grey, beige and taupe) without being overpowering.
Here are the last four Mood Boards I've whipped up to blog about previous Pantone colours of the year. The blog posts can be found on this blog.
With love in fashion, and have a beautiful 2014 in style.
